Tiffauges is a French commune chosen for the construction of a fortified castle, due to its ideal strategic location in the face of barbarian invasions. Based between the Poitevin and Breton regions, this building is, without doubt, the largest medieval city in all of Vendée. This castle has been inhabited since the Gallo-Roman period, and was built by three families. Between the 12th and 15th centuries, it was the viscounts of Thouars who erected the ramparts and the keep. At the beginning of the 12th century, Geoffroy de Thouars began construction of the castle. This building was nicknamed “Bluebeard’s Castle”, in reference to its most famous resident, Gilles de Rais. This lord of the Marches de Bretagne in the 15th century made several improvements, particularly to the architectural level of the castle. Indeed, he contributed to the consolidation of the keep and the moat. In the 16th century, Louis de Vendôme built defense towers to protect himself from possible enemy threats.
Visiting the Château de Tiffauges
Very popular with tourists, the Château de Tiffauges is the most important medieval site in the region. The beauty of its architecture and its many relevant details have earned it classification as a Historic Monument. During your visit, do not hesitate to pass by the ruins of the chapel. This is the oldest construction of the fortress, built in the 11th century. As for the Gate tower, it was intended to defend itself against a potential attack. Romanesque in style, this tower is connected to a keep. Among the elements of the castle to visit, it is possible to cite the Round Tower, the Perthuis Tower, the Vidame Tower, as well as the lordly home. Accompanied by a guide, you will also discover the conservatory of war machines. This is the most important collection in Europe of medieval reconstruction subjects. It is possible to see 16 life-size reproductions of war weapons, which allows visitors to try their hand at firing projectiles. For families, entertaining activities, films and shows are organized on the site.

For adults over 26 years old, the entry price is €8. For those under 26, the price is €6. For people with reduced mobility and job seekers, the price is €6. However, entry is completely free for children under 6 years old.
